Essex is often treated as somewhere you pass through on the way to the coast, which undersells it. Shoebury East Beach is a proper day out on a warm day, Hopefield Animal Sanctuary near Brentwood is a gentle one for younger children, and Colchester has the indoor options for when it rains.
