Dumfries and Galloway is the first part of Scotland most families from the north of England reach, and it is worth stopping in rather than driving through. The forests and the Solway coast do most of the work.
We list 17 attractions across the area. The Creetown Gemrock Museum is a genuinely odd and rather good hour, the working farms near Castle Douglas suit younger children, and Gretna Green is the easy stop off the motorway.
Dumfries is on the rail line. For the Galloway forests and the coast you will want a car and a full day rather than an afternoon.
