Gretna Green is best known for runaway weddings, and the Old Blacksmith's Shop where they took place is now a visitor centre with an exhibition, sculpture and the famous anvil. It is an easy stop rather than a full day, and it works well as a break on the drive north or south, with the outlet shopping at Gretna Gateway alongside. For more to do, Annan and the Solway coast are a short drive west, and Caerlaverock Castle with its moat and wetland reserve is around half an hour towards Dumfries.
