Sussex gives you Brighton at one end and the South Downs at the other, and between them a coastline that stays useful well outside the summer. Brighton is the obvious anchor, with the i360 and the seafront, but Chichester and the harbour side are quieter and often better with small children.

Brighton parking is expensive and fills early on a hot weekend. The train from London drops you five minutes from the beach, which is usually the better call.
